Borough of Birmingham

Birmingham SignBirmingham PA is a small borough located within Huntingdon County along Route 453 and the Little Juniata River between Tyrone and Waterstreet. The population of Birmingham was only 90 people at the 2010 US cenus. Settled in the late 1700's Birmingham was first the site of a gristmill and sawmill operated by Andrew Porter.

In 1800 brothers John and Charles Cadwallader aquired acreage in the area which would later become the borough and established the first paper mill in the area. They would also be responsible for a plan to create a manufacturing town along the Little Juniata which would be named Birmingham after the city of Birmingham, England. During the early 1800's the town flourished as manufacturing grew. Birmingham was incorporated as a borough on April 14, 1828 and its population reached its height of around 400 persons.

During the prosperous years in Birmingham many new buildings were constructed, including a Methodist Church built in 1874 which still stands. The Mountain Seminary was incorporate in Birmingham in 1851 and opened as a boarding school for girls in 1853. The school would later be sold to Professor L.G. Grier and operates today as the Grier School.

Upon the arrival of the Pennsylvania Railroad in Tyrone the influence of Birmingham as a manufacturing and shipping location would diminish as Tyrone and Altoona in Blair County were more suited to growth and development.
